Biography: Katinka de Wet is an associate professor at the Sociology department at the University of the Free State. She is also the co-director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Digital Futures at the University of the Free State. She specialises in medical sociology, digital sociology, with a specific focus on digital wellbeing, and research ethics.

Dear Roser Yes, indeed. These contradictions are writ large in the current approach to data extractivism and usage. It is truly concerning that history seems to repeat itself given the manner in which data could be abused to build models to enrich others and not those whose data are being used.
