This paper aims to investigate best practices for safeguarding women’s land rights by digitizing land records for internally displaced women returning to their villages in the Darfur states of Sudan. It will explore the impact of digitization on improving their access to livelihoods, empowering them to participate in decision-making processes, and amplifying their voices in their communities. The paper will place particular emphasis on UNHABITAT projects in strengthening land rights for peaceful coexistence in Darfur, among others.

Dear Wala,
What an interesting presentation and project! Congratulations! I have a few reflections/questions to share. What is the access to technological devices and internet like in rural areas? How did you manage to implement the project given the challenges of digitalization?
On another note, how is the interaction regulated in the working groups? Are women truly heard? Do they feel these are safe and open spaces to participate? How can we create safe and open spaces to ensure successful project implementation?
Thank you very much, and congratulations!

Thank you Estefania, much appreciated. Your reflections are truly valid. for the software we have introduced open source applications such as QGIS, kobotoolbox mobile data collection app, and free satelitte imagery providers. We trained the technical staff of national governement and Youth from communities on utilizing these apps. For the hard components we equepped the National authorities with new and cost effective GPS and Real-time kinematic positioning RTK, the idea is to acuire equipments that might be less precise but it perfectly fit to purpose of exercise which is in planning level.
Women inclucion is a process that needs advacacy, we have conducted number of community meetings, and sometimes according to context women focus groups to hear their voice then combine them to the rest ot the group.

Great presentation. What are the issue around data protection and privacy, especially, women who provide their data. What mechanisms are I place to ensure that other partners/ stakeholders do not use their data without their consent?

Dear Emmanuel,
Thank you for your comment, it is one the most important issues. to address the privacy issue, we used a GIS based application, we assigned focal point from the official Ministry staff who has the right to edit, also assigned a meember from community leaders t oreview and report any updates. the process is not easy yet utilizing technology helps alot in privacy and rights issues
